NetSafe Utah. Tell an Adult. (Grades K-3)

NetSafe Utah. Tell an Adult. (Grades K-3)

This is another important video I would want to share from the NetSafeUtah.org

There are several of these short clips I would want to share with my students before they get on the computers. I would want to share this with parents also so they know to talk to their children about the dangers of the internet.
Things to learn from this video:
- If someone makes you feel unhappy or uncomfortable while you are on the internet
- Tell an adult
- If someone makes you feel unhappy or or uncomfortable while you are in the real world
- Tell an adult
- There are lots of people you can tell- parents, teachers, grandparents, principal, aunt or uncle
- People can protect you and help you not feel bad and uncomfortable again

Personal Information

Students need to know and understand what personal information is.

Who can they tell and who should they not tell?

NetSafe Utah. What is the Internet? (Grades K - 3)

This is a great website I have been learning about in my internet safety class. Netsafeutah.com
Before students can start playing/learning on the computers, we need to make some rules, make sure they understand them, and agree to those rules. Then sign the paper they need for school. There are lots of good videos that break it down for students of all ages from this website.
This clip covers a few important things:
- you need to make and follow the rules while on the internet
- the internet is not alive, things that happen on it aren't the real world
- if you follow the rules you will be kept safe
- there can be bad things on the internet

Rules for computer use

1. Students can only view websites that are linked to the teachers home page

2. Tell a trusted adult if you don't feel good about something you saw on the internet

3. Shut down your computer if you see something inappropriate.

4. Never give out any personal information.

5. People may not be who they say they are in line- Be cautious of chatting and games.

Internet Safety Games to Play

A. Internet Safety:Game for Kids

B. Technology for Grades 3-6
http://www.att.com/Common/images/safety/game.html

C. AT&T has made a game for kids. The story behind the game is that there is a bad man who is sending emails, texts, and photos that are making the people in the small town feel yucky. The superhero in the game is going to travel to all the areas in the town to try to stop the bad man. If we help him answer all the questions correctly regarding internet safety, he will be able to stop the man, and put him in jail.

D. I would use this along with the first several weeks of school, when I do my internet safety material. I would use this game (and others) to reinforce the ideas I have taught. I would use this after I watched the movies on netsafeutah.org

Internet Safety Games

A. Internet Safety Game

B. My World for Grades K-2
http://www.kidscomjr.com/games/safety/safety.html

C. This website teaches 10 basic rules for how to be safe on the Internet. Rules that teach about copyright, personal information and getting permission to use things that are already on the web. It also talks about if you see things that make you feel upset, tell your parents. The number one rule is have good manners and be polite on the web!

OrganWise Guys Shorts: Health Trek 01- CALCIUM

OrganWise Guys Shorts: Health Trek 01- There are several short little clips about eating healthy. This one is about how your body and bones need calcium. When it comes to teaching students about eating right, the food pyramid and choosing what they should eat at lunch- these clips would be great. I would watch them, talk about them, then make a book about what what foods help different parts of your body. This is a very important subject to me. Students could use camera's and video cameras to act out their own version of these movies.

In this movie students learn
- milk, cheese, and broccoli are high in calcium and will "save" your body when you are so tired. They will give your bones the boast they need.
- other short movies under this same grouping teach how important it is to eat breakfast, exercise, eat fiber, not eat to much fast food, etc...

The Magic School Bus. Works Out.

The Magic School Bus Works Out is for students K-4. Many students are so curious about their bodies. This would be a great PE movie or Health movie. Students can learn how to make their muscles work. They can see what happens to their bodies when they get so tired and can't keep racing. Then I would have some race activities. I would make the students race and work their lungs and muscles. Then talk about what is going on in their bodies.

This movie teaches-
- muscles need air to work
- red blood cells, heart, muscles work together
-how muscles need oxygen.

The Magic School Bus gets Planted

The Magic School Bus. Gets Planted is for grades 1-4. It is a 24 minute that introduced all kinds of new words to the student. The movie clip would be great to watch as the start of your unit about plants. I would not just watch the movie straight through. I would watch the movie and as the students hear new words they don't know we could pause the movie for a few moments and write down the words the students hear.

The movie teaches
- about the different parts of a plant- roots, steams, leaves
- what plants need to eat
- how they "eat"
- how leaves breath in air
